Pre Primary
New Hanover Pre-Primary
Our philosophy in educating our children in the formative years is: “Learning through play”. It forms the foundation for the holistic growth and development of all children who pass through our doors at New Hanover Pre-Primary. Here we are committed to providing a warm and caring environment where our children are able to feel secure, loved, and happy, and are able to realise their full potential in terms of intellectual, physical, social and emotional development. Our carefully planned and developmentally sensitive programme, caters for both our Owlets (ages 18-36 months) and our 3-6 year olds equally, which invites creativity and curiosity into the learning process. Our exemplary, dedicated and skilled teachers are totally committed to helping each child realise his/her full potential by providing exceptional education. Our daily programme includes alternating structured and free play times. A substantial amount of time is allocated to free play, which encourages hands-on discovery and experimentation, using the whole school’s facilities and equipment. This free play allows children to develop their physical skills such as balance, coordination, muscle strength, agility, etc.
Children’s critical thinking skills, independence, self-discipline and social and emotional growth, are nurtured and fostered during this time of play. Further benefits include sensory integration experience, development of language skills, as well as opportunities to explore their creativity and imagination in fantasy play. Our daily formal time allows children to spend a more structured period with their teacher. This is an opportunity for the teacher to address certain concepts and skills in language, mathematics, creative arts, music, movement, life skills, physical development, and environmental awareness.
Our Owlets, Grade RRR, RR and R programme, is based on the ISASA’s Early Childhood Development Curriculum Model, and is complemented and enriched by the excellent “Time2Read” Literacy Programme and the NumberSense curriculum. In addition we provide the children with emotional intelligent tools to equip them with the necessary skills to master life now and as they mature. This provides a unique, developmental, cognitive curriculum proven to make a profound difference in children’s learning abilities, resulting in exceptional academic, social and personal success. We endeavour to provide a loving, nurturing, fun-filled and curiosity driven environment, where children develop a love for learning and an appreciative outlook on life, others, and the world around them. Through this, we intend to equip the children with the necessary foundational skills embedded in Christian values to embrace the future with confidence.

Music Teacher
Mrs E Wortmann
My name is Elisabeth Wortmann. I am the Music and German teacher at New Hanover Preparatory School. I teach in all phases from Gr RRR all the way up to Gr 7.
I started my teaching career as a Gr 1 class teacher and Music teacher at Wittenberg Laerskool many years ago. Since then I had the privilege of gaining a lot of experience in teaching both Music and German to younger kids (preschoolers and primary school) and older kids (Gr 11 and Matrics), and even some adults. I have always loved teaching young kids, who are still open to some fantasy and fun in the classroom. Both Music and German allow me to indulge in these aspects of teaching, and especially the Music Appreciation lessons that I do with the Gr RRR’s up to Gr R’s in New Hanover PrePrimary.
During these weekly half hour sessions with the Pre-Primary phase the children get exposed to music from various genres, including the old Masters. Through movement and short “work songs” they get introduced to the basics of music literacy, that is, note values, rhythm and beat, pitch as in high and low and the first intervals between notes using the Solfege (Do, Re, Mi, etc). Visually this is presented with simple pictures and accompanied by stories. The children play very simple rhythms and accompaniments on the percussion instruments. We also sing, move or dance to familiar children’s songs. All of this gets enhanced by a short trip into our “movie theatre”, where short video clips are used to introduce topics, demonstrate various instruments, including our voices, instruments of orchestra, songs, and the various components of music. It always amazes me how much these very young children are already able to learn and apply in music.
I am very enthusiastic about Music as a subject not only because it is such fun and allows for creativity, but also because of the added benefits it brings to the children’s development. Making music increases brain power and functionality, improves maths and language skills, boosts short and long term memory, it enhances gross and fine motor skills, it builds empathy and helps us to express our emotions, it is a natural stress reliever. Music promotes equity, inclusion and belonging, and at New Hanover PrePrimary the children already start being exposed to all these benefits from Gr RRR onwards. How cool is that!
Our exemplary, dedicated and skilled teachers are totally committed to helping each child realise his / her full potential by providing exceptional education.
