Established in 1858, New Hanover Preparatory School is the sixth oldest independent school in South Africa.
Our rich history dates back to the mid-19th century when three pioneering farmers, members of the Hermannsburg Congregation, sought to establish a new community. Their vision extended beyond their farms and families—they recognized the importance of education and faith in shaping future generations.
The Early Years: 1858–1875
- 1858 – The foundation of our school was laid when the first classes were held in a multipurpose building on Mr. Aulfes’ farm, serving as a parsonage, church, and school.
- 1867 – The first two dedicated classrooms were built, marking the school’s physical establishment.
- During this period, children followed a rigorous routine: before walking long distances to school, they tended to farm duties such as feeding pigs and milking cows.
- The school year ran from 2 January to 31 October, with no winter break, as children were required to assist on their family farms in summer.
A Vision for Education: 1875–1979
- 1875 – New Hanover Prep made history by introducing compulsory education for members of the congregation—an incredible achievement, as it preceded compulsory education for the rest of KwaZulu-Natal by 33 years.
- Late 19th – Early 20th Century – Despite its small size, the school remained a cornerstone of the community, offering high-quality education deeply rooted in Christian values and culture.
Growth and Development: 1979–Present
- 1979 – To support the school financially, a farm and piggery were acquired. This initiative, which included sugar cane farming, became a vital source of funding and remains an invaluable asset to the school today.
- For many years, enrolment remained below 100 students, preserving a close-knit, family-oriented learning environment.
- Today, New Hanover Prep educates over 160 children from Grade RRR to Grade 7, combining the strong traditions of its past with innovative teaching methods and a progressive approach to primary school education.
A Legacy of Excellence
While our school is over 165 years old, our commitment to academic excellence, faith, and personal growth remains unwavering. We embrace our heritage while continuously evolving to ensure that we remain at the forefront of independent primary education in South Africa.
